Hebrews 7:8 says “Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.
Teachers on tithes will explain these verse in this way. Here on earth tithes are being receive by people who die and at the same time, while it’s being receive by men, there in heaven it is being received simultaneously by God who lives eternally. So, though tithes are receive by men who die, it is actually being receive by an eternal God spiritually.
The correct interpretation of this verse was translated in AMP version. “Furthermore, here [in the Levitical priesthood] tithes are received by men who are subject to death; while there [in the case of Melchizedek], they are received by one of whom it is testified that he lives [perpetually].” Hebrews 7:8 AMP. See the difference? The point is, the recipient of tithe in the history of the bible was only received by two entity. First by Melchizedek- an immortal being. Second by the sons of Levi. Jesus is in the order Melchizedek priesthood, He live to date and forever. Before the law, it was personally received by an immortal being to which might actually be an ephipany of Jesus. During the law it was permitted to be receive by mortal being through sons of Levi. Under the grace, since levitical priesthood was abolished, He did not transferred the right to receive His tithes to Gentile Christians. Let’s say, we Christians becomes spiritually Jews hence, those who preach the gospel becomes spiritually levites. Sorry to say, since Levitical priesthood was abolished, even levites today by blood is not entitled already to receive such privilege, how much more those who claim to be spiritually affiliated? Levites today who don’t believe in Christ might claim that he is still entitled to receive tithes. Since he don’t believe in Christ, in the levites mind, he is still under the law hence, he still need to perform burnt offering and other type of offerings that they alone was allowed to perform and of course, since they thought that they are still obligated to be priests, the entitlement to receive tithe in the levites mind, is still their right to receive. But, for Christians we acknowledge that, those offering rituals has already been abolished along with the priesthood. Since it was abolished, tithe too which was the privilege of them being a priest has already been cancelled. Actually, the bible itself says it was cancelled in Hebrews 7:18 because of its weakness and unprofitability.
