Some might have noticed or observed that women in some christians church denomination have this belief that women should not cut their hair. This belief is not without basis, this is from 1 Corithians 11:14-15. According to their teaching, woman should not cut her hair because, long hair in the aformetioned verses means uncut hair. Hair is her covering not necessarly long hair, though long hair is glory to a woman. Do note that the verse did not say, for her “long hair” is given to her as covering, it says for her “hair”, so hair alone is covering. Let us be careful not to add even a bit of His words. This was how Eve was deceived.
So, given the following interpretation:
Hair=covering based on 1 Corinthians 11:15…for her hair is given to her for a covering.
Long hair=kom-ah’-o which means to let the hair grow. Since it says let the hair grow and did not say cut, it follows that the hair for a woman should just let it grow because the meaning did not imply that it can be cut off. It’s like saying, “you run” since stop is not implied just keep running without stopping. Or, to let the nail grow, since cut is not mentioned just let it grow without cutting.
“Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair=uncut hair, it is a dishonor to him?” I Corinthians 11:14 NKJV
To what extent though does a man need to cut his hair?
- a.) Cut short-with hair but with little covering on the head (face will not be covered).
- b.) Cut to shoulder length- with hair covering the whole head including the face.
- c.) Cut all the hair- totally exposed with no hair covering the head (face and skin head totally exposed with no hair covering).
“For a man indeed ought NOT to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.” I Corinthians 11:7 NKJV
So not to cover man’s head meaning no hair? Now, why is it not being impose to men on this churches? If anything, should women need not to cut their hair because long hair means uncut and hair is covering, men need to be bald because men ought not to cover their head? Remember not cut is strictly impose to a woman because it say “not” an absolute term and God is absolute so, when it say’s not cut, it should therefore not to be cut. But then again, it also says “not cover” to a man and covering is hair. Again God is absolute, yes means yes, not means not, its not maybe or short. The church impose an absolute rules to a woman, it should also be the same to a man. Not is not, not does not mean maybe or short. This is so self explanatory and need not to expound some more.
To some extent, some would say; we must understand the word spiritually, covering could mean covered with holy ghost. With this I say, for a woman ought to be covered meaning, she should be covered with holy ghost. Then how about to a man, because it says, a man not ought to be covered, you mean to say man must have no holy ghost covering?
In short, the interpretation of these churches who does not allow women to cut their hair is like this: The covering of women is her hair, her covering should be wear uncut or long hair. But, they mislook or ignore that for a man, they need not to wear covering and since hair is covering not veil (as according to their teaching), man should or ought to be bald.
Now, I know that you might say, the verse say; “her covering”. So hair is for woman covering but for a man it does not necessarily mean his covering also. Make sense yes. But, how are you to explain this verse?
“For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.” I Corinthians 11:6 NKJV
Again notice the verse did not say head covering or long hair, it only says covering and we know based from 1Corinthians 11:15 that hair is covering for a woman. So when the verse say, not covered it means no hair. A reminder again that Eve was deceived because the devil had distorted the word of God just a little bit. So, let us be very careful.
Having said this, if re written the verse would go like this:
“For if a woman is no hair, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be with hair.” I Corinthians 11:6 NKJV
How are you to shave a woman with no hair exactly?
Under normal circumstances, I usually don’t be bother. But then again, this is not another book, this is the word of God. We are not suppose to add or substract or mis apply His words. In this case, the church who impose that a woman should not cut her hair in responce to the verse mentioned is clearly mis applying or wrongly interpret His word just to look like or have a sense of peculiarity from the rest of Christians denomination. Christians meant to be peculiar but in the process we should not damage or mis apply His words.
