“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Matthew 28:19 NIV
“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the NAME of JESUS CHRIST for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 NIV
Are you baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Or, in the name of Jesus Christ?
If you are baptized in 3 unspecified names then, you are not yet sealed in the name of Jesus Christ.
“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,” Ephesians 1:13 NIV
The Holy Spirit is sent in the name of Jesus Christ therefore, in the name of Jesus Christ we should be sealed not in unspecified names and baptizing is an act of sealing who owns who.
Let me explain:
Peter obeyed exactly as commanded in Matt 28:19. The question is how? Peter baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and Jesus instructed to baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?
The key verse is this:
“If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.” Hebrews 8:4 NIV
Christ is a title name which means a chosen one, an anointed one not only in becoming the lamb of God but also in becoming the new high priest changing the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:12) therefore, the title name Christ took effect only when Jesus was not on earth anymore because, technically, when Jesus spoke in Matt 28:19, He was still on earth, He knew that the name Christ was not yet effective and Holy Spirit was not yet sent in His name and so His name was not to be used yet for baptizing instead, Jesus instructed to baptize in a name that relates to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Although Jesus did not specify the proper name to whom we should be baptized, Peter understood this as evident in Act 2:38, he had that revelation as this was one of the keys in the kingdom of heaven given to him which was bind on Earth and was honored in heaven. Matthew 16:19
So, what is that name? None other but the name of Jesus Christ.
JESUS is a name that relates to or linked to the Father. Christ Himself said, He came in His Father’s name and the name given to Him was His Father. Therefore, Jesus name is linked to the Father.
“I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me. If others come in their own name, you receive them.” John 5:43 CEB
“I’m no longer in the world, but they are in the world, even as I’m coming to you. Holy Father, watch over them in YOUR NAME, the name you gave me, that they will be one just as we are one.” John 17:11 CEB
CHRIST is the Image of God and Image of God is the Son. Therefore, Christ relates to the Son.
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of those who don’t have faith so they couldn’t see the light of the gospel that reveals Christ’s glory. Christ is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:4 CEB
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the one who is first over all creation,” Colossians 1:15 CEB
And, HOLY SPIRIT was sent in the name of the Son- Jesus Christ
“The Companion, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I told you.” John 14:26 CEB
Therefore, the name Jesus Christ is linked to the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Apostles understood this and that by baptizing in the name of Jesus Christ, they actually followed Jesus instruction in Matthew 28:19.
As a matter of fact, apostles in the bible baptized only in the name of Jesus Christ, not in the unspecified name of Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Noticed that in Matt 28:19, it says, baptized in the name- singular only. Hence, in Acts 2:38 they baptized only in the name Jesus Christ because the name in itself embodies the 3 title names.
Below are verses whereby apostles baptized in a specified name – Jesus Christ.
“So he ordered that they be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.”Acts 10:48 NIV
“because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 8:16 NIV
“On hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.”Acts 19:5 NIV
